The first time I met Peter Marino, I thought he was Marisa Berenson’s bodyguard. The two friends were leaving a Dior show in Paris, and as I walked alongside them, chatting up the stylish pair for our camera, I distinctly remember thinking that Marino was some kind of heavyweight handler for Berenson. He kept telling her that the car was waiting and that they were going to be late. Marino’s black-leather motorcycle get-up and burly presence took on caricature proportions in my mind—his larger-than-life look seemed incongruous with the haute fashion environment, and his off-the-cuff humour gave him a warm and grounded aura that was rather refreshing in light of the somewhat stuffy surroundings.
